February 2: Finding Dawn (Film) Monday at the Mabee, 11-1

Description: Dawn Crey. Ramona Wilson. Daleen Kay Bosse. These are just three of the estimated 500 Aboriginal women who have gone missing or been murdered in Canada over the past thirty years. Directed by acclaimed Métis filmmaker Christine Welsh, Finding Dawn is a compelling documentary that puts a human face to this national tragedy.

This is an epic journey into the dark heart of Native women’s experience in Canada. From Vancouver’s skid row, where more than 60 women are missing, we travel to the “Highway of Tears” in northern British Columbia, and onward to Saskatoon, where the murders and disappearances of Native women remain unresolved.

Along the road to honour those who have passed, we uncover reason for hope. It lives in Native rights activists Professor Janice Acoose and Fay Blaney. It drives events such as the annual Women’s Memorial March in Vancouver and inspires communities all along the length of Highway 16 to come together to demand change.

Finding Dawn illustrates the deep historical, social and economic factors that contribute to the epidemic of violence against Native women in this country. It goes further to present the ultimate message that stopping the violence is everyone’s responsibility.

Description: Men Are Human, Women Are Buffalo uses a modern variant of shadow puppets (nang talung) and interviews with a range of women in a powerful film about gender relations in modern Thailand. Women from a range of social origins explain their struggles against violence, discrimination and oppression.

A country that is promoted to western tourists as a fairytale land of beautiful beaches, pristine countryside, cheap vacations, and a thriving sex trade industry, Thailand is also one of the developing countries with the highest incidence of violence against women. Approximately 44 percent of women in Thailand have indicated that they have suffered sexual, physical, and emotional abuse by a partner or a stranger.

While these five stories are culturally specific, their commonality with the experiences of other women will provoke productive discussions about incidence of violence against women around the world.

Feb 16: What I Want My Words To Do To You (film) Monday at the Mabee, 11-1

Guest Speakers: Norma Weiser, Suzanne MacDonald and Carol Hill, Volunteers at Topeka Correctional Facility     FREE, Donations accepted

Description: unprecedented look into the minds and hearts of the women inmates of New York's Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. The film goes inside a writing workshop led by playwright Eve Ensler, consisting of fifteen women, most of whom were convicted of murder. Through a series of exercises and discussions, the women, including former Weather Underground Members Kathy Boudin and Judith Clark, delve into and expose the most terrifying places in themselves, as they grapple with the nature of their crimes and their own culpability. The film culminates in an emotionally charged prison performance of the women's writing by acclaimed actresses Glenn Close, Marisa Tomei, Rosie Perez, Hazelle Goodman, and Mary Alice.

February 23: "Human Trafficking in America" (Lecture and Discussion),Monday at the Mabee, 11-1

Guest Speaker: Vicky Luttrell     FREE, Donations accepted

Human Trafficking is the fastest growing criminal industry in the world, and yet it still exists under the radar in the world of important social issues.  It exists in every country in the world, and in every state of our country.  Washburn Alumni and member of Nashville Rescue and Restore, Vicky Luttrell, will discuss this important humanitarian issue during Monday at the Maybee.

Since 1998, a ferocious war in the Democratic Republic of Congo has left over 5 million people dead, more than any other conflict since World War II. Within this crisis are the incalculable casualties: the tens of thousands of women and girls who have been systematically raped, mutilated, or tortured by soldiers from both foreign militias and the Congolese army. The world knows little of these women. They and their children have suffered and died in silence. Only now are their shocking stories beginning to be told.
